How Is Cannabis Essential Oil Made?
Cannabis essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers and upper leaves of female cannabis plants. All oils I’ve found are using the Cannabis sativa botanical. Hemp essential oil does not have any intoxicating properties, so please use it only for aromatherapy home use.
Terminology: Cannabis vs. Marijuana vs. Hemp
Before we start diving into the information about cannabis essential oil, I want to establish the terminology. There appears to be a typical misconception that cannabis and hemp are the very same things (they are not). However, this is not so!
Cannabis is the name of the plant. Cannabis and Hemp come from the same species of plant, but there are distinct strains of the plant that have lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of CBC, which are then called “Hemp”.
The THC component of the plants is what contains the psychoactive component, whereas CBD is NOT psychoactive but rather pain relieving and anxiety calming. Typical Cannabis contains anywhere from 3%-20% of THC. Over the years, cannabis farmers have bred their strains of plants to derive at a more desirable level of THC, or a more particular smell, or other desirable properties. Hemp farmers don’t have this interest so they have left the plant largely unaltered ¹.
Cannabis essential oils sold today are really hemp essential oils, derived from the plant strain that is lower in THC and higher in CBD.
The names “Cannabis” and “Marijuana” can be used interchangeably though, even though the “M-word” is actually pretty controversial in today’s culture. The word didn’t exist in America until some political changes earlier in the century². But in essence, they are the same thing, “Marijuana” being basically a slang term for Cannabis.
Does Cannabis Essential Oil Contain THC or CBD?
Hemp essential oil does not contain CBD or THC, and if it does, it is below detectable levels of 0.01%, which doesn’t show up on industry-standard GC/MS reports. It is not an intoxicating oil. The active components in this Cannabis oil are myrcene and caryophyllene, which are packed with anti-inflammatory properties.

“Myrcene, the most studied terpene in the cannabis plant, has many benefits in the human body; it is an anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogen, and regulates permeability of cell membranes. Myrcene is a powerful analgesic, muscle relaxant, and sedative. And within the entourage effects, contributes substantially to treating diabetes, insomnia, stress, inflammation, and cancer.” ³
“Caryophyllene (or β-Caryophyllene) is a spicy, peppery terpene found in many different edible plants. Spices like black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, as well as herbs like oregano, basil, hops, and rosemary, are known to exhibit high concentrations of caryophyllene. Due to its affinity to the peripheral
CB2 receptors, caryophyllene often appears in anti-inflammatory topicals and salves. Caryophyllene has the following potential medical benefits: Anti-inflammatory and analgesic, alcohol craving reduction, anti-cancer, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant.” 4
