Origin

blue tansy flowering plant

The Blue Tansy Flowering Plant

Blue Tansy essential oil  is produced from a flowering plant that originated in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. The botanical name is Tanacetum annuum and belongs to the aster family ¹.

Its oil is steam-distilled from the plant leaves, buds, and flowers. During distillation, it releases a compelling blue color due to high chamazulene content.

In fact, ‘Azul’ is a Portuguese and Spanish word meaning ‘blue’. The bluish coloration is a connotation of its name ‘Blue Tansy Essential Oil’ and distinguishes it from common tansy oil, which is not blue.

Common Tansy

Common Tansy Plants

Another variety of tansy oil also exists. It is called Tanacetum vulgare and originated from Eurasia, meaning Europe and Asia. The word ‘vulgare’ is a Latin terminology meaning ‘common’. It is also known as golden buttons, bitter buttons, and common tansy.

This invasive plant is everywhere now. It has a strong reddish stem with yellowish button-like flowers. NOTE: Consuming the leaves and flowers of common tansy could be harmful to humans.

Some unethical essential oil sellers may adulterate the very expensive Blue Tansy oil with common tansy. Beware of a price point that’s too good to be true when shopping for your oils.

Blue Tansy Essential Oil Benefits

This lovely aromatherapy oil has a nice and invigorating, herbaceous fragrance that is soothing and gentle on your skin. It has antibacterial, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties, making the oil one of the best choices for aromatherapy ².

Relevant effects include:

  • Blue tansy has antihistamine properties.
  • It is used as a potent anti-inflammatory.
  • In skincare, it can treat sunburn, eczema, acne, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, flaky and dry skin, or other minor skin irritations.
