Don’t we all love a clean and fresh smelling home? If you have carpets in your house, you know that they can get especially musty and yucky over time.
I’ll be the first to admit, cleaning my carpets isn’t usually high up on the to-do list. Especially when commercial cleaning products can be so full of harsh, harmful chemicals, that I’d rather just not get that stuff into my house!
Now that’s why natural, homemade cleaning solutions have become my go-to solution.
In this blog post, I’ll show you how to make a super quick & easy homemade carpet deodorizer with just a few simple ingredients found in your pantry. Not only is this recipe safe and natural, it’s also budget-friendly and effective.
Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and hello to a fresher home with this easy DIY carpet deodorizer recipe!
DIY Carpet Deodorizer Recipe
Our living room is well lived-in, and it has a big area carpet. I like to give that rug a little natural freshening up without having to go rent a commercial carpet cleaning machine.
To make a baking soda carpet deodorizer, all you need is baking soda, essential oils, and a jar with holes in the lid.
This recipe works great on stairs, too, or other areas that might be hard to access.
Ingredients
- 1 cup baking soda
- 15 drops organic Germ Fighter essential oil, or Germ Destroyer for a child friendly variation
Instructions
- Grab a small (1 cup / 250 ml) mason jar.
- Use craft paper, pencil and scissors to create a lid for your mason jar.
- Poke holes into the lid using a chopstick or other sharp kitchen utensil (the end of a meat thermometer works, too).
- Fill the jar with baking soda.
- Add 15 drops of Germ Fighter essential oil.
- Stir until the mixture is completely combined.
- Sprinkle the mixture over your carpet.
- Let it sit for 1-2 hours.
- Vacuum it up.
TIP: Use a glass or stainless-steel container (not plastic). And if you’d rather not craft a paper lid, use these shaker lids from Amazon.
Sprinkle the mixture all over your carpets, and especially onto any stains. Let it sit for at least 1-2 hours or better yet, overnight. Stale smells in the carpet will be soaked up by the baking soda, and the essential oil leaves a lightly scented area behind. Vacuum up the mixture when you’re done (or in the morning).
Why these Ingredients?
Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the most versatile and effective cleaning agents that you can use in your home. It’s great for getting rid of odors, including those from pets, cigarettes, and food.
Essential Oils
I’ve used the lovely organic Germ Fighter blend from Plant Therapy in this recipe. If you have a child friendly home, use the KidSafe Germ Destroyer blend.
However, you can use other bacteria-fighting essential oils if you wish. Other options I’ve used are: Lavender, Tea Tree, Sweet Orange, and Bergamot essential oils.
Final Thoughts

By using simple ingredients found in your pantry, you can make yourself a pleasant smelling carpet deodorizer in less than 5 minutes flat.
