I love using my essential oils for skin care. It’s a perfectly easy place to start making the switch to using more natural ingredients in day to day life. Skincare products don’t have to be complicated!

For years, I’ve used traditional beauty care products for cleaning and toning my face. But as I started using essential oils, I’ve learned how powerful and wonderful they can be for your skin!

Why Use a Natural Skin Toner?

Facial toners help your skin remain moist without drying it out. If you want glowing skin, using a homemade facial toner is a healthy, natural alternative to store bought products. At times, commercial products can create more issues than they solve. On the other hand, the ingredients in my toner recipe are super simple!

This essential oil toner helps to keep your skin looking fresh and moisturized throughout your skincare routine.

Facial toners are suitable for all ages and recommended for daily usage. Using a DIY natural facial toner is fabulous for skin regardless of oily or acne prone skin.

What Essential Oils are Good for Facial Toner?

In my recipe, I’m using rose essential oil. It is by far my favorite in terms of smell and how effectively it balances my skin. I have acne prone skin as well, and Rose oil really works for me!

However, other options for great facial toner oils are:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Geranium essential oil
  • Frankincense essential oil
  • Copaiba essential oil
  • Clary sage essential oil
  • Roman Chamomile essential oil
  • Tea Tree essential oil
  • Cypress essential oil

You could certainly create a facial toner blend for yourself, and use more than one essential oil. For the sake of this article, I’m keeping the oil ingredients list simple and short though. Before we dive into my recipe, just one last quick note about skin types.

Skin Types

Everyone has a unique skin type and associated skin care needs. If you already know your skin type – great! If you don’t, here is a quick and easy quiz to help you get to know your skin.

  • Dry skin: Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender
  • Sensitive skin: Lavender, Rose
  • Damaged skin: Lavender, Rose, Copaiba
  • Normal skin: All essential oils
  • Oily skin: Tea tree, Clary sage, Cypress
  • Acne prone skin: Tea tree, Geranium

If you are not sure where to start, use Lavender essential oil. It is calm and soothing, and great for all skin types. Plus, most people really love the scent.

Homemade Toner Recipe

DIY facial toner ingredients

I like making my own face toner using witch hazel (a natural astringent), Vitamin E oil, hydrosol, and essential oils. It’s quick, cheap, and super easy! Here is how:

Toner Ingredients

  • 2 oz amber glass bottle
  • 20 drops Vitamin E oil
  • 16 drops Blend of Rose essential oil blend
  • 1 oz Witch Hazel (alcohol free)
  • 1 oz Lavender hydrosol

Why these Ingredients?

  1. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that blocks free radicals in the skin, thus helping to reduce wrinkles and age/ sun spots. It supports keeping the skin’s youthful appearance.
  2. Rose essential oil promotes skin balance and a healthy glow. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory¹ that can reduce skin irritation and irritability.
  3. Witch hazel is a natural herbal remedy with numerous health benefits. First and foremost, it has has astringent properties, which helps decrease inflammation, reduces redness and irritation. It helps clean the skin, tighten pores, and leaves you with a fresh feeling complexion.
  4. Lavender Hydrosol is a byproduct of essential oil steam distillation. The hydrosol carries the same therapeutic properties as the essential oil, only it is a lot less concentrated. Hence, it is perfectly gentle for facial skin care!

The natural products outlined here must not be used undiluted on the skin, which might lead to irritation.

Directions

  5. Gently wash skin with warm water and your favorite cleanser to remove excess dirt. Use your hands or a wash cloth.
  6. Apply toner onto a cotton round.
  7. Wipe your face with the cotton round twice daily, morning and evening.

Will the toner still fit in the 2 oz bottle if I use 2 oz of witch hazel instead of the 1 oz of lavender hydrosol? Should I get a 4 oz bottle instead?

Yes, it will fit if you substitute witch hazel for lavender hydrosol. Simply leave a small space at the top of your bottle, don’t fill it right to the rim. This will make sure your bottle will still fit the drops of essential oils and Vitamin C oil, as well.

I meant that, since you suggested to use the 2oz of witch hazel with 9 drops of lavender to replace the lavender hydrosol. Using that instead of the hydrosol, should I buy a 4oz bottle instead of the 2oz one?

Ah! I see where the misunderstanding is. Your adapted recipe will be 2 oz in total, not 3oz. You’ll use: 2 oz witch hazel, 9 drops of Lavender, 16 drops Blend of Rose, and 20 drops Vitamin C.

How would I measure out 20 drops of vitamin E oil if the oil is in a 4 fl. oz. bottle with no ‘dropper’ ? Can you use a medicine measuring cup instead?

Hi. 20 drops of essential oils equals about 0.2 teaspoons. With such small amounts, it’s pretty hard to measure them out by volume. I have found this conversion calculator useful: https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/essential-oil-conversions

Can I use lavender essential oil or lavender water if I don’t have/ can’t find lavender hydrosol? (For the homemade toner recipe).

Hi! Lavender water is actually another name for Lavender hydrosol, so yes, you can definitely use that. If you don’t have anything else on hand, yes you can use the essential oil and simply use the total 2 oz of Witch Hazel instead. I’d add 9 drops of Lavender essential oil to replace the hydrosol in this recipe.
