Top 10 Best Essential Oils for Dry Skin

woman washing face

Always apply essential oil lotions on clean, washed skin.

We’ve all been there: grey and tired looking skin, irritated and itchy hands. All you want is a boost to your well-being.

Refresh Your Space for Spring

A simply homemade dry skin oil blend is elegant and luxurious!

First thing you’ll want to do, is to blend your essential oils into a base oil such as Jojoba or Coconut. Then, use the mix on any of the most dry spots of your skin: elbows, knees, and as a hand lotion if you wish.

Make sure to wash and clean the surface of your skin before you apply your essential oils lotion.

When your skin starts cracking, use one of the following essential oils for dry skin.

1. Frankincense (Boswellia serrata)

Frankincense essential oil is an excellent essential oil for dry skin as it includes anti-aging benefits. Most skin looks older when it is dry, and drier when it is old. A quick first step for dry skin first aid is to add Frankincense into your skin care. Frankincense hydrosol is also a wonderful option for a natural facial toner.

2. Sandalwood

Sandalwood essential oil should be your go-to oil for any skin-related treatment! If I could choose just one oil out of this list for best skin care benefits, it would be Sandalwood. It is anti-aging, skin-softening, complexion-clearing, itch-relieving miracle worker. Seriously.

3. Carrot Seed

Carrot Seed essential oil is one of the best oils to promote beautiful skin. It aids in skin cell regeneration, which comes in handy for healing dry, cracked skin. You can also use it for mildly chapped or environmentally stressed skin. Aging skin of all types can benefit from Carrot seed essential oil. On its own, it doesn’t smell the best though. I recommend to blend it with Lavender or an earthy note like Sandalwood or Manuka.

4. Geranium

Geranium essential oil balances our hormones. This works towards a clearer complexion and a more even skin tone. It improves circulation and minimizes inflammation all at the same time. It’s a great recipe to reduce wrinkles. Geranium also smells nice and flowery. Adding a drop or two to your facial lotion should be a super easy routine to maintain!

5. German Chamomile

German chamomile is also known as blue chamomile as it has a high content of azulene, giving it its blue color. It is very calming to the skin, and works wonders for dry skin conditions. This essential oil will penetrate deeply into the layers of your skin and soothe it on all levels. It is especially useful if you happen to have sensitive skin, as it is gentle at the same time.

6. Helichrysum

Helichrysum essential oil is the perfect addition to your skin care routine. It is often compared to chamomile because of its similar properties: gentle, and good for sensitive skin. It is effective against bacteria that can cause skin irritations such as rashes. Add Helichrysum to your skin care regime if you want to prevent or fight redness, rashes, blemishes or shaving irritation.

7. Lavender

Lavender essential oil has survived the test of time. It is among the safest oils to use, and among its many benefits also come benefits for your skin. Lavender is especially good for skin conditions related to inflammation. This includes acne, eczema, burns, scrapes and insect bites. Use lavender in any skin application that needs soothing.

8. Palmarosa

Palmarosa essential oil can help balance the creation of oil in the epidermis. It is helpful to heal cuts and bruises; and it can decrease the seriousness of acne breakouts. Palmarosa essential oil is often used for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

9. Manuka

Mankua essential oil is the cousin to tea tree oil, only in a milder version. Manuka helps to curb bacterial growth and bacterial attacks ¹. It is a great natural remedy for dry skin that is prone to bacteria exposure. If your dry skin is prone to developing eczema, follow this DIY eczema cream recipe here. It features Manuka essential oil!

10. Jasmine

Jasmine essential oil is antibacterial and anti-viral. It helps the skin remain healthy and strong. Use it to reduce mild skin irritations, along with your dry skin symptoms. It also smells heavenly, which helps the mental tiredness that can come from prolonged itching and irritated dry skin.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this short introduction to the 10 best oils for dry, cracked skin.

Dry Skin Quick Facts

  • Medically, dry skin is known as xerosis ². It is caused by lack of moisture in the skin. Untreated, dry skin might become irritated and lead to a red rash (xerodermatitis).
  • Dry skin can develop on any part of your body as your skin acts as an umbrella, safeguarding you.
  • Xerosis is extremely common and can impact any individual, though it occurs more frequently in elderly populations.
  • Dry skin is a year-round phenomenon. It is mainly caused due to the excessive loss of moisture from the surface of the skin.
  • Skin can get dry for quite a few reasons, but there are strategies to prevent it, which includes keeping your skin moisturized and avoiding rubbing or scratching the epidermis.
  • Generally, dry skin is brought on by external factors such as extreme temperatures or weather conditions. While perhaps it does not immediately come to mind, dry skin can occasionally be a symptom of a bigger skin issue. See your medical professional if you have extremely dry skin or persistent symptoms.
  • If your dry skin started after you began a new sort of prescription, you should speak to your physician and see whether you can either change medications or modify the dosage to lessen the side consequences.

Hi Cathy. I’d use a simple Frankincense Hydrosol. No mixing or blending required. Frankincense hydrosol supports skin firmness and helps tighten sagging facial muscles. I own this one from Mountain Rose Herbs and love it!
