plant therapy essential oils review

When I first heard about essential oils, I was being introduced to Young Living. But quite quickly, I questioned the price tag and started looking around.

Since then, I’ve been researching and comparing the quality of many essential oil brands. If you looked in my desk drawers right now, you’d find oil bottles from many different companies.

This post contains affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Read my full disclosure policy here.

Over the years, Plant Therapy has continued to be one of my go-to oil companies to purchase from. In this article, I want to share with you, why.

If you’re online browsing Plant Therapy essential oils reviews, please stick around. I’ve personally experienced this essential oil company for over 10 years, and am excited to show you what they’re all about.

I’ve also written a direct comparison of Plant Therapy vs Young Living over here.

About The Company

pt executive team

The management team at Plant Thearpy: Paul, Retha, Chris, Lori.

Plant Therapy essential oils is an amazing brand that you can shop with today. They sell a high quality product at an affordable price.

It is a family-run business to this day.

In 2009, President Chris Jones bought a small natural beauty products company from his mother-in-law, an aromatherapist. Jones saw a need for high-quality essential oils that would be attainable to the customer at an affordable price – and that became part of the company’s core mission when it was officially founded in 2011.

Quality Essential Oils

essential oils and accessories from plant therapy

Plant Therapy essential oil products are priced fairly and the selection is huge.

All oils sold by Plant Therapy are 100% pure and of highest quality.

The testing and quality program at Plant Therapy was developed by world renowned essential oil expert Robert Tisserand of the Tisserand Institute. While he no longer actively works in partnership with Plant Therapy, the processes and protocols he established are still adhered to today.

Where Does Plant Therapy Get Their Oils?

Plant Therapy sources their oils from countries all over the world. They carefully vet each farmer, distiller or supplier to ensure commitment to quality standards.

Before obtaining a raw material from a certain farmer or supplier, Plant Therapy ensures the supplier’s background, reputation, commitment to quality and commitment to the industry is met to satisfaction.

Where does Plant Therapy source their oils from?

For every essential oil that’ll end up in the bottle in your medicine cabinet, quality sourcing is where it begins.

Testing and Transparency

As a first step, Plant Therapy’s oils are organoleptically tested by their Certified Aromatherapists. Organoleptic testing means smelling the oil from a testing strip over time – some characteristics do not reveal themselves until the oil has been evaporating for 30 minutes or more. It also includes evaluating the color, consistency and general appearance of an oil, and comparing it to what a good quality oil should look and smell like.

Next, the essential oils are sent to one of several third-party laboratories where they undergo multiple tests including GC/MS testing (Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry).

where to find gc ms test reports

Click on this image to see a larger version of it.

Any company can tell you that their oils come from trusted, 3rd party oil producers. When it comes right down to it, an actual test result with chemical analysis of the oil speaks volumes!

It’s a huge red flag if a company can’t provide you with 3rd party test results.

Plant Therapy works hard at being transparent and offers test reports publicly on their website.

Every bottle of oil that you purchase from Plant Therapy will have a specific batch code label. This number is directly linked to the testing reports for each batch of oil.

You can find these test reports by going to the essential oil’s product page and clicking on “Test Reports”.

Shop Plant Therapy

Oil Bottling

To keep an essential oil’s properties intact, you must protect it from oxygen, heat, and light exposures. Looking after the essential oil will help it achieve its best shelf life.

Plant Therapy does a great job at this, selling their essential oils in proper dark amber glass bottles that keep out harmful UV rays.

Labeling

Proper essential oil companies label their bottles with latin plant names, also known as botanical names.

plant therapy essential oils bottle labels

Plant Therapy properly labels their essential oil bottles with latin botanical names.

This helps to accurately identify the plant species (and sometimes even its variety). For example, Lavandula angustifolia (common lavender) and Lavandula latifolia (spike lavender) have different chemical compositions and thus different therapeutic properties.

For those interested in aromatherapy and herbal medicine, knowing the Latin names helps in learning about the plants and their properties more accurately. It’s a part of the educational process in understanding essential oils and their uses.

When researching brand quality, it indicates that the essential oils company is knowledgeable about their products, and that they are providing precise information. All of this is a sign of a high-quality, trustworthy product.

Focus on Education

Plant Therapy currently has 6 Aromatherapists on staff. They are dedicated to educate oil users, and promote oil safety for everyone.

Their blog and website offers excellent information on essential oils use. You can browse a library of tips for beginners, or join their Facebook Group “Safe Essential Oil Recipes by Plant Therapy” to stay up to date and get expert help in creating your DIY recipes.

I certainly feel safe using Plant Therapy oils around my home! And I appreciate learning from the people who spend their every day around oils.

Are Plant Therapy Essential Oils “Therapeutic Grade”?

Check it Out

There is no organization that oversees the quality of essential oils. ‘Therapeutic Grade’ is simply a marketing term that Plant Therapy many years ago decided not to use.

When looking for the highest quality oils, don’t look for terms such as “Therapeutic Grade”. Any company can use this term at their own discretion.

It is best to look for a company that can show their quality control process to you as the consumer. Plant Therapy does this with publicly available third party test results, and having expert aromatherapists on staff.

Can You Use Plant Therapy Oils Internally?

Plant Therapy wants consumers of their essential oils to know all there is to know about using essential oils safely. They’ve published a guideline on internal use of their oils here.

Plant Therapy vs. Young Living or doTerra

If you’re coming from a popular MLM company such as Young Living or doTerra, you can start with Plant Therapy’s handy comparison chart. It will let you select a matching blend to your YL or doTerra favorites.

As part of their product line-up, Plant Therapy carries USDA certified organic essential oils. Essential oils are made from various parts of plants or fruits. This could be seeds, stems, roots, flowers, bark, leaves, or other parts of a plant.

If a plant has been produced following strict organic production principles, it can likely make a difference in your overall experience of that oil. You can learn more about the difference between organic and non-organic oils.

Plant Therapy Starter Kits

Plant Therapy offers a great selection for available kits or gift sets. You have options with or without a diffuser, KidSafe sets, or specialty sets such as the Sleep Easy bundle, the Wellness Set, or the Chakra Synergies box.

Roll-Ons

Shop Roll-Ons Here

Roller bottles are a quick & easy way to get started with using essential oils. The essential oils are pre-diluted in a carrier oil for easy application. Simply roll them onto your pulse points, behind the ears, or onto the area of concern.

I take roll-ons with me all of the time, especially Lavender and Worry Free.

Plant Therapy currently offers 49 different roller bottles, mostly around $10-$14 each. I find these roll-ons budget-friendly, fun to use, and beautiful to gift!

KidSafe Oils

Essential oils specifically made safe for kids.
View selection

Plant Therapy’s KidSafe line of essential oils are oils specifically designed for children ages 2-10.

That’s wonderful news if you’ve been hesitant about what to use with (or around) your little one!

The KidSafe line is designed to help with a variety of kid-specific issues and ailments, such as stuffy noses, calming down and rough, red skin.

All the oil blends have fun, easy-going, child-friendly names, such as “Germ Destroyer“, “Ear Relief” or “Sneezy Stop“. And let me tell you – kids just LOVE to have products that are made and labeled “just for them”. Introducing kids to essential oils with this line just became a whole lot more magic for everyone involved.

The KidSafe products are available as 100% pure, undiluted essential oils, or also as pre-diluted roll-ons for even easier use with your kids.

Body Care

Natural body oils are a great way to nourish your skin without having to mix your own lotion.

I’ve tested and reviewed almost all of the body oils that are available in the line-up of Plant Therapy’s body care items. Let me tell you… it’s hard to pick a favorite! It comes down to personal scent preference, and what you need the oil for.

If I had to pick just one body oil though, I would recommend the Sleep Body Oil with Chamomile. It smells lovely and has a light-weight feel to it. Definitely a great product to end your day with.

When I looked at the line-up of facial oils and serums, I also couldn’t resist but to just splurge on the whole line-up to see which oil I’d like best.

This also lets me give you my full, honest opinion on the product selection, and which facial oil is best used for which skin condition.

At the end of the day, I mostly reach for the Vitamin C serum, the Tea Tree serum, and the Younger Glo facial oil. Those work for me, and I love using them on a daily basis.

For the sportsfans among us, Plant Therapy’s muscle aid line is a nice set of products to have! The Muscle Aid balm comes in a handy lotion stick that you can throw in the gym so it’s ready to use right after your post-workout shower. Simply throw it into the bag – it doesn’t even add much extra weight.

Pricing

Plant Therapy offers amazingly competitive pricing.

Some may ask, why are oils so much cheaper with one brand, than another? Doesn’t that mean the quality is lower?

Not necessarily!

Larger companies can buy much larger quantities of oils from their suppliers. Thus, they get a better price on their raw materials. In turn, they can offer these prices to the consumer.

So price isn’t always about oil quality! It’s equally about how big the company is and at what sort of volume discounts they can shop.

Here is a quick comparison of a few great brands of oils, and their bottle pricings. Please note that Rocky Mountain Oils bottles are 1.5x the size at 15ml instead of 10ml.

Plant Therapy (10ml) REVIVE (10ml) Rocky Mountain Oils (15ml)
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) $7.49 $9.00 $20.95
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) $7.49 $11.00 $16.95
Lemon (Citrus x limon) $8.99 $7.00 $9.95

I’m sure that when you order your oils, you’ll be excited to receive them in the mail. While the parcels arriving at your doorstep may look a little plain on the outside, trust me, you’ll be super excited once you open it up. The products speak volumes!

Plant Therapy offers free shipping & returns for all U.S. retail customers.

International shoppers have to pay shipping fees, calculated at checkout after you enter your postal code.

  • As an example, I put in a Canadian address, and the shipping was $54.56 for both Economy or Priority shipping.
  • I put in an Australian address, and the shipping was $108.07 for both Economy or Priority shipping.

If you are an international customer, I would recommend that you try to find your favorite Plant Therapy products on your country’s Amazon page, so that you can possibly avoid some of these shipping fees. Alternately, team up with your friends, put in a HUGE order, and split the shipping fees. ;)

Plant Therapy vs REVIVE

Now if you’re comparing essential oil brands, you may have also heard about REVIVE oils.

I certainly use both brands of essential oils, but I do prefer Plant Therapy over REVIVE.

plant therapy vs revive

Plant Therapy vs REVIVE essential oil of Peppermint

Both companies offer high quality, GC/MS tested essential oils. Both companies make those test results available for public download. And both companies have their own loyal fan following that shout only 5-star reviews.

As for me, I find that Plant Therapy blends are a bit smoother and smell just a tad more well-rounded.

When it comes to single essential oils, I could go with either brand. I usually like to shop a good sale, so Plant Therapy might have the slight edge there, as well (they always have some pretty sweet promotions running).

The main benefit of shopping at Plant Therapy is their large selection of oils. Plus, you can also find so many other products like carrier oils, diffusers, natural body care items and more. Plant Therapy, for me, just offers more of what I like, compared to REVIVE essential oils.

PT is also a much larger company, though, so it’s fair to say that they have way more resources to allocate to their product line, marketing, and business development. If you prefer the smaller sellers, go with REVIVE.

Final Thoughts

Plant Therapy is a friendly, professional and high quality brand that I am able to highly recommend to you with 5/5 stars. The oils are fairly priced and absolutely deliver as expected. The accessories are well designed, stylish, and I’m proud to have them around my home.

My friends and family always ask me about Plant Therapy when they stop over.

Having the KidSafe Line-up offered is an absolute game changer for our family and helps me teach the little ones about how to safely enjoy essential oils no matter what age. They feel good, special, and valued all in their own world when they unpack an oil that is especially made for them.

I feel Plant Therapy as an essential oils company helps me make the best choices of how I want to approach personal health and well-being through aromatherapy. I give them my wholehearted recommendation!

Great info on Plant Therapy! I have been using Plant Therapy essential oils for over 2 years now. I have no problem with DoTERRA or Young Living. I simply like Plant Therapy pricing better. The true professionals (Jeff Styba) all say the same thing: Buy the essential oils from their original country for the best high grade results. Buying Lavender from Bulgaria is the best option if possible! It’s almost a another level of awesomeness! As for daily use and best prices for pure oils, I will continue to buy from Plant therapy!

Hi June, I just put the final touches on an article covering safe essential oils use around cats; find it here: https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/which-essential-oils-are-toxic-to-cats/. There are some considerations on which essential oils to avoid and why. That said, once you know which type of oil you can use around your cat, then for sure I would say Plant Therapy’s brand is a good choice of oils to buy!

It depends on the oils honestly. Unlike many animals, cat’s livers cannot break down certain chemicals. The more they are exposed to it, it can compound and make them extremely ill, since they are so pure. Many of the common and popular essential oils are toxic to cats. You want to avoid anything with phenols (in minty oils), ketones (in minty oils), alpha-pinene (pine based oils), and D-limonene (citrus oils). If you want to diffuse them, you have to make sure that your oils are super diluted.

Hydrosols are great since they aren’t so strong for cats and not so concentrated. I did a lot of research since my cat is a precious member of my family and I don’t want to be the reason for her to become sick. If you do choose to diffuse, be careful and smart. If you still want to use essential oils, I found placing them in a roller ball with a carrier oil to be extremely effective.

I also was using YL and will continue to place a minimum yearly order to keep my associate membership status, but I withdrew from their rewards program a year ago because it was so costly, and have been researching ever since. I love what I hear and read about Plant Therapy and the fact that Robert Tisserand is involved in the process. I placed my first order with Plant Therapy this morning, and will look forward to receiving it.

I have been a YL customer for a few years. I do like all the information that is at your fingertips, you can call your rep or go to facebook and find info on oils/blends “uses” and “good for” types of things. But, I have cancer and no longer work. I was intrigued by your article and thought I would give Planet Therapy a whirl and i was astounded at their prices – so low! I had the same concerns as Tanya S. above had, but those were answered. I went on Plant Therapy and looked up Frankincense, they had an “organic” frankincense and a “non organic” frankincense. I guess it’s a no brainer, buy organic because it’s cleaner/better but why have the non-organic product at all. Am I missing something here??

Steph, thank you very much for your comment. I too buy organic whenever I can, but I am sure some people appreciate being able to save a few extra $ on the non-organic alternative offered. It’s the same principle of offering organic and non-organic bananas at the grocery store. Some people would never buy non-organic, while others are happy with the non-organic choice. I also have a “What about the *organic* in essential oils?” article, discussing this exact question. Have a look here: https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/organic-essential-oils/. Hope this helps!

I love this company and these oils. They are as good as if not better than Young Living and Doterra and why pay the exorbitant price. Only other EO company I buy from is Mountain Rose Herbs when I can’t get my favorite oils from Plant Therapy. The price for the sets is so affordable and I have purchased several for friends and family to wean them off of OTC and “Big Pharma” drugs. If Robert Tisserand endorses this company you know you can trust them to produce very high quality oils! Thank you for getting and keeping us healthy naturally…..with no side effects.

Hey Amber, nobody can tell you exactly whether or not it’s okay to ingest essential oils for your particular case. This is medical advice that even certified aromatherapists aren’t supposed to comment on. It’s something you have to choose for yourself. I highly recommend you read through my summary of all things “ingesting” or “eating” or “using internally” of essential oils here, to get a good overview of the reasons behind why ingesting essential oils is not recommended: https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/using-essential-oils-safely/.

I would love to start using your oils. I do have one question, however. Do your oils contain anything synthetic at all? I would like to use EOs for my health, and I’m looking for the most pure product out there.
    Thank you

Is it true that only one oil company has oils you can ingest?

This review is very promising…I’d love to try them. I currently only use Young Living and NOW Foods, both brands with which I have had success and like. The only downsides of Young Living is the price. Does Plant Therapy have a consultant program like Young Living? I really like the fact that you do not have to go through a middleman to buy them.

Hi Carol. Plant Therapy does not have a consultant program like Young Living. Young Living and doTerra are the only two companies in the essential oil world today that are what’s called “multi level marketing (MLM)”. The MLM set-up is where you get independent sales representatives being distributors for their products offline, in their area of friends and influence. All other essential oil companies I’m aware of are direct sales to buyer – which explains why they’re able to offer much more competitive pricing models. In Non-MLM, there are no middle-levels of sales-reps stacked underneath regional sales-rep stacked underneath yet another sales rep that all need to make a commission of your sale. In MLM, that’s exactly how it works – every level of consultant or middleman makes a cut of your purchase at the end of the line.

So, I’ve got a question…. I met with a friend who is all about DoTerra and tried to sell me on the $150 package…. She shared that she ingests many of the oils by putting them in her water. After reading the comments above, I’m wondering if things like lemon and lime oils can be placed in 16oz or more of water instead of using the actual fruit.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Debbie, the question on ingesting essential oils is such a hot topic these days that I can’t answer your question thoroughly in just one sentence. I have instead summarized all of my research and knowledge in this article here, “Are Essential Oils Safe To Ingest?”: https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/using-essential-oils-safely/

I have used DoTerra and Young Living oils in the past and always loved them but was limited to what I could buy due to price. I tried Plant Therapy for the first time about 2 years ago by slowly buying an oil at a time to carefully compare to the other brands I had. After the first few I was convinced beyond a doubt that they are as effective — and in some cases MORE effective! — than the way more expensive counterparts. I am in love with Plant Therapy and now buy them exclusively and have never had a single complaint. I can afford oils I always thought were just too expensive to try with other brands and have been blown away. Customer Service has always been great and have never had a problem. I am so thankful for this company!!!!

I absolutely LOVE Plant Therapy. The oils are great, customer service is awesome. I can’t recommend any other company. I love that the test reports are made available for each oil, and there are also data sheets for many of the oils to help you understand how the oils can help you and how best to blend them. I’m also glad the pricing is reasonable, and not set so high just to pay out to several levels of MLM reps.
And safety — they are so concerned with safety and education.
Plant Therapy is truly an amazing company; I’m so glad I found them.

I got their six-piece “starter” set on Amazon and was VERY disappointed in them. In every instance but the peppermint, the fragrances were so weak or “off”, I could hardly tell what they were! Useless in a diffuser. I swear a bottle of Tea Tree Oil that I bought at Wally World actually had more fragrance to it and smelled like the real thing far more than Plant Therapy. Again, for the price point I was astounded. They cost twice as much as ArtNaturals, which are the best overall that I’ve found thus far. The NOW brand is okay and while the citrus oils smell nice, they’re definitely NOT the high-quality kind that you want for a diffuser, because they will leave an orange or yellow stain, drops of oil residue and a potential clog behind. Sun Organics Orange Oil, which smells AMAZING, has the same caveat. I love ArtNaturals and will stick with them, noting sadly that the only drawback is many of their fragrances don’t seem to come in bigger bottles or are sold outside of kits.

Amazon isn’t the most trusted source to order from – you could have bought from someone who diluted or altered them. Always go directly to the company site .

Hi there! I’m reading more on Plant Therapy as a go-to oil company for our home…that being said…can you explain why the company I use now charges $42.47 for a 5ml of Frankincense (sacra) and Plant Therapy’s $14.95 for a 10ml? I love the price…but it makes me worry it’s not quality/safe. How can they make their prices so low? Thank you for your help!

Hi Tanya. Thank you for your comment! I wrote to Plant Therapy customer service on our behalf to get the best answer to your question. Posted below is their reply! I hope this helps!

Emma, thank you so much for you question, which many have asked! I am always happy to answer because of the high quality of our oils and very fair prices that we offer:)
Sadly, some companies claim that our eos aren’t of high quality. The real and only way in determining quality for essential oils are in the testing reports. We are happy to share the testing report of not only each of our oils, but with each batch of every oil! They can be viewed on the oil’s webpage, and if not there yet, can be requested. Many companies will not share these reports.

Also part of the testing is done by essential oil expert Robert Tisserand, who is a consultant, but is highly respected in the industry and he has a say in our oils and their quality, and whether they go through or not. he is the author of “Essential Oil Safety”.

      I hope this helps you:)

      Best Regards,

BLUF: no, not recommended- ingestion of essential oil could result in stomach upset.
Found this transcription from an interview with Robert Tisserand, mentioned in the article above. It addresses ingestion of EO.
      Hope it helps

I just ordered two of their oils I am going to put some in the freezer, pure oils won’t freeze. Young Living oils do not freeze, were Sun oils do. I will test Plant Therapys, I really hope they don’t, they
      sure are more affordable.
