Why are cracked heels a problem!?

I sure don’t enjoy it when my feet do that to me.

It itches, I want to scratch it, and not only that, it also looks quite unsightly.

Whenever my heels (or sometimes the sides of my big toe) start showing signs of cracked skin, I rush to this home remedy for cracked heels that I am about to share with you.

Why do Cracked Heels happen?

Cracked heels, or heel fissures, are most commonly a symptom of over-using your feet.

  • Ill fitting shoes. Sandals or slingbacks can expose your heels and dry the skin out excessively.
  • Barefoot walking. While the sensation of barefoot walking is incredibly amazing, the practice can lead to heel damage and dryness. Try to wear shoes when walking on outside pavement or uneven ground.
  • Take care of your feet. Avoid scrubbing your feet excessively, or soaking for long periods of time in hot water, which can lead to further dry skin problems.
  • Exfoliate. Use gentle exfoliating techniques such as a loofah sponge or pumice stone to remove dead and dry skin, which can cause cracked heels. Natural methods like using baking soda to create a paste for gentle massaging can help eliminate impurities, prevent buildup of dead skin cells, and enhance skin texture.
  • Moisturize regularly. A simple moisturizing cream in the morning and at night can help keep your foot skin health intact.

Best Essential Oils for Cracked Heels

Here is my list of essential oils I’d choose for treating cracked heels or similar foot conditions. For tips on how to use the oils, please scroll down.

Lavender Essential Oil

I mention Lavender on so many blog posts I write, since it is indeed such a great oil.

It works for cracked heels due to its antiseptic properties. Antiseptic means it destroys or inhibits the growth or action of microorganisms (such as bacteria), especially in or on living tissue such as the skin ΒΉ.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil’s anti-inflammatory properties play a big role in helping alleviate cracked heels. If your skin tends to bleed or get infected, add Geranium to your DIY recipes to help counteract the inflammation.

Geranium oil also smells incredibly pleasant, adding to the positive emotional benefits of preparing an essential oils home remedy.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary oils are anti-inflammatory in nature as well. Furthermore, they act as a natural deodorizer, helping to address athlete’s foot and fungal infections.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree essential oil is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes it a great choice for healing cracked heels, as it can help to kill any bacteria or fungus that may be causing the cracks. Tea tree oil is also a natural moisturizer, which can help to keep the heels hydrated and healthy.

How to Use Essential Oils for Cracked Heels

To use essential oils for cracked heels, simply use one of the following methods:

home remedy oil for cracked heels

Foot Massage with Carrier Oil

Add a few drops of essential oils to a carrier oil like coconut oil, sweet almond oil or jojoba oil and simply massage into the heel. If all you have on hand are cooking oils, try olive oil, castor oil or even avocado oil. Sesame seed oil is also considered extremely beneficial for feet and help you keep your skin nourished.

Really, any carrier oil you have on hand will do! The fatty acids in carrier oils bond with the skin. They are naturally healing and provide you with soft, supple skin.

Overnight Moisturizing Socks

Start with the foot massage recipe above and lather on a very thick amount. Finish by wrapping your feet in thin cotton socks and leave them on overnight. The socks will help to lock in the moisture and let the skin absorb the healthy massage oil to heal cracked feet. The socks are especially helpful if your foot care area of concern is dry heels.

Foot Bath with Essential Oils

Add your essential oils of choice to a foot bath and soak your feet for 15 minutes. This treatment can be done once or twice a day until the cracked heels start to heal.

Final Thoughts

I hope you add essential oils to your home remedy toolbox to help heal cracked feet.

Dry cracked feet can benefit incredibly from natural solutions such as essential oils with their regenerative properties. Essential oils like eucalyptus and lemon are excellent for exfoliating dead skin cells and promoting new skin growth. They can improve circulation, which can reduce the appearance of cracks and enhance overall skin health.
